WHY ELECTROLYTES MATTER

66% of Britons are dehydrated, and many of us don’t even know it. This matters because even low levels of dehydration can cause symptoms like headaches, brain fog, fatigue, and muscle cramps. And most people think the key to solving dehydration is simply to drink more water. But water is only one part of the hydration equation. We also need the right balance of electrolytes (essential minerals) to control water retention and transport it to the right places in our bodies.

When our body is low on electrolytes, especially after a sweaty workout, it can impair critical bodily functions and have a detrimental impact on performance. Fortunately, we can replenish electrolytes fast by taking rehydration supplements.

But most electrolyte powders and leading sports drinks are incomplete and contain only two out of the six essential electrolytes our bodies need, and they can be high in sugar and calories. Enter SURGE, with zero sugar and only 2kcal per serving, our complete formula provides rapid action hydration. So, you can feel fully powered and ready for action.

Proven benefits from scientific studies

  • The ISSN (International Society of Sports Nutrition) states that limiting dehydration during exercise is one of the most effective ways to maintain exercise capacity. This is because exercise performance can be significantly impaired when 2% or more of body weight is lost through sweat. Given average sweat rates are reported to be 0.5-2 litres/hour during exercise, it recommends individuals drink enough fluids pre-exercise to prevent dehydration, during exercise to maintain body weight and soon after exercise to completely replace lost fluid and electrolytes.

  • The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommendations for sodium intake is 300–600 mg per hour (1.7–2.9 g of salt) during prolonged exercise since it can promote fluid retention and can prevent hyponatremia in individuals who drink excessive quantities of water.

  • A double-blind study examining the effects of magnesium supplementation on muscle soreness and performance found that perceived recovery was improved vs. baseline for the group taking magnesium but not for the group taking a placebo. Results showed significantly reduced muscle soreness, session rating of perceived exertion, acute rating of perceived exertion, and improved perceived recovery after magnesium supplementation and some evidence for positive performance impact.

  • A placebo-controlled study found that the 10 men (out of a total of 100 screened) with the lowest vitamin C values had lower VO2Max levels than the 10 men with the highest vitamin C values, and that after 30 days of supplementation with vitamin C, VO2Max significantly improved in the low vitamin C cohort as did baseline levels of oxidative stress. The researchers concluded that low vitamin C concentration is linked with decreased physical performance and increased oxidative stress.

What are electrolytes?

Electrolytes are minerals, such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, chloride, and phosphate, that are vital for performing important functions in your body. When dissolved in water, these minerals produce an electrical charge, hence the term “electrolytes”. They play a crucial role in supporting muscle function, transmitting nerve signals, balancing pH levels, and regulating chemical reactions, especially when it comes to hydration and maintaining the balance of fluids inside and outside of cells.

Why are electrolytes important?

Electrolytes are essential minerals that play a role in just about every vital organ, from your heart to your lungs to your brain. They are necessary for:

  • Fluid Balance: They help maintain the right balance of fluids in your cells, tissues, and blood, which is crucial for normal bodily function.
  • Nerve Function: They enable the transmission of electrical signals across nerve cells, facilitating communication between the brain and other parts of the body.
  • Muscle Function: They are necessary for muscle contractions, including the heartbeat. In other words, they help your muscles perform better, whether you’re running, doing a deadlift in the gym, or standing up from a chair.
  • pH Balance: They help balance the body's pH levels (the measure of acidity and alkalinity), which is vital for normal cellular function.

What are the symptoms of an electrolyte imbalance?

Your body needs a precise balance of all the electrolytes to ensure your body functions normally. An electrolyte imbalance means that the level of one or more electrolytes in your body becomes too high or too low. Symptoms of electrolyte imbalance include:

  • muscle cramps, spasms, or weakness
  • fatigue and lethargy
  • persistent headaches
  • brain fog
  • confusion or difficulty with cognition
  • anxiety
  • irregular or racing heartbeat
  • difficulty breathing
  • low or high blood pressure
  • numbness or tingling

Call your GP if you’re experiencing any of these symptoms to organise a blood test. In severe cases, electrolyte imbalances can become life threatening if left untreated.

What causes an electrolyte imbalance?

Electrolytes are mostly lost through sweat, urine, and waste so electrolyte levels naturally fluctuate throughout the day. And even though you routinely replace electrolytes through your diet, it’s very easy to deplete your body’s inventory of these essential minerals and create an electrolyte imbalance. There can be several reasons for this including:

  • Excessive sweating due to intense physical exercise or exposure to high temperatures (e.g., sauna)
  • Heavy alcohol consumption or binge drinking
  • Severe vomiting and/ or diarrhoea
  • Certain medications such as laxatives and diuretics
  • Underlying health conditions such as kidney disease, heart failure, liver disease and diabetes

When might I need to take electrolytes?

While every situation and body is different, there are a few common instances where electrolyte replenishment may be necessary, for example:

  • During or After a Workout: Prolonged and/or strenuous exercise, particularly in hot or humid conditions will likely result in higher fluid and electrolyte loss through sweat.
  • During or After a Sauna Session: Exposure to high temperatures can lead to significant fluid and electrolyte loss through sweat.
  • During Illness: If you’re sick with a fever, vomiting, or diarrhoea, you’re likely losing fluids and electrolytes rapidly.
  • After Drinking Alcohol: Alcohol acts as a diuretic, which means it makes you urinate more than usual leading to a subsequent loss of electrolytes.
  • While Traveling: Long flights can lead to dehydration, making electrolyte balance crucial.
  • In Everyday Life: 66% of Britons are dehydrated, and many of us don’t even know it. Staying hydrated and maintaining electrolyte balance can help with mental clarity, energy levels, and overall health.

How and when shall I take SURGE?

Tear open one stick pack, pour into 500ml of cold water, mix thoroughly and drink. SURGE can be taken before or during exercise for maximum performance and endurance, or after to support rehydration and recovery. You can also take it anytime during the day to provide rapid hydration as needed.

Why does SURGE contain Creatine Monohydrate?

Creatine helps muscle hydration by drawing water into muscle cells. By improving muscle hydration, creatine helps maintain electrolyte balance within the muscle cells. Proper hydration ensures that muscles contract and relax more efficiently, which can reduce the likelihood of muscle cramps caused by dehydration or electrolyte imbalances. Furthermore, according to the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN), creatine monohydrate is the most effective ergogenic nutritional supplement currently available to athletes in terms of increasing high-intensity exercise capacity and lean body mass during training. Which means SURGE can help you go harder and stronger for longer.
